So that while you're flying your voot cruiser out to investigate mysterious things, you dont crash into a shell and hit the windshield causing your SIR unit to hit you, thus making your eye fall out.(At least my sir unit Doh isnt like that. I mean, she spends all day at the bakery as a fake 'taste tester' but at least she always reminds me to put my seatbelt on!) And this children, is why you wear seatbelts.
